A sump system is three parts, and people usually think about only one. There is the pit, which collects water arriving through the footing drain or through the slab. There is the pump, which lifts it out. And there is the discharge, which carries it far enough from the building that it does not simply return.

Failures cluster in the third part. A discharge line ending two feet from the foundation feeds water straight back into the drain tile, so the pump cycles endlessly and the basement stays damp. The detail that matters

What actually goes wrong, and why here

Backup power is where most Denver sump installations are genuinely deficient rather than merely imperfect. The heavy rain and rapid melt that fill a pit are frequently the same weather that drops the power, and a primary pump without a secondary path is offline exactly when it matters. Battery backup systems run a second pump from a deep cycle battery, and water powered backups run off municipal supply pressure with no battery to maintain at all.

Discharge freezing is the specifically local failure. A line running above grade to a splash block will freeze solid during a January cold snap, and the pump then pushes against a closed pipe until the motor overheats. Burying the run below frost depth where the grade allows, or fitting a freeze relief fitting that lets water escape at grade if the line blocks, prevents that.

Pit condition matters more than people expect. A pit that is too shallow gives the float almost no travel, so the pump cycles constantly. A pit without a sealed lid lets the basement humidify from the water sitting in it, and in some Denver homes it also lets soil gas into the living space, which is why a sealed lid is worth specifying rather than treating as optional.
